Aussie Home Loans

After creating a commercial animation for Aussie back in 2015, we worked with the team again on a refreshed take of the animation.

We didn’t want to just rehash the old one and update the info. We wanted to give it a new life.

This time, we focused on hand-drawn elements and keyframe animation, creating a style with more texture, warmth and detail. As a result, the latest animation brought new energy to Aussie’s service offering.

A refresh, yes.

A copy-paste job in a fake moustache, absolutely not.

Discovery & Strategy

Having worked with the team at Aussie Home Loans before, we settled into a groove very quickly.

They were thrilled as we discussed the potential for the new video: all the things it could be, how we could bring it to life, and how it could help explain the journey of applying for a home loan.

They were as excited as we were by the potential, and the ideas weren’t just coming from our side of the table.

They really wanted to put the viewer in the driver’s seat.

DING DING DING.

Why not actually put them in the driver’s seat and create a video told entirely from the point of view of the customer?

They loved it, and so we were off.

Concept Development

The first thing we needed to do was find a design style that felt comforting and homey.

So many financial product videos are bright and colourful, but can feel a little too polished, a little too corporate. We wanted something rougher around the edges. Handmade, even.

Something that spoke to the hands-on experience Aussie delivers.

So our animators put the keyboards and mice to the side for a couple of days and got back to their art school roots: pencils and paper.

They sketched and erased and sketched again.

Visual Design

Soon, the team found a look and feel that allowed them to tell the story in a way that felt unique, while also speaking to the audience Aussie wanted to connect with.

The hand-drawn elements gave the animation warmth and personality, helping the home loan journey feel less intimidating and more human.

After a little back and forth, we landed on a look that both their team and ours felt worked.

Visually and functionally, it allowed for plenty of invention, which is exactly what you want when explaining mortgages without making everyone quietly check the time.

Testing & Refinement

Once the style was locked in, the animation began.

We employed several elements of 3D and 2.5D to assist with transitions and help the video come alive. The challenge was making the customer’s point-of-view journey feel smooth, engaging and easy to follow.

The motion had to guide the viewer naturally through the process, without overcomplicating the story or losing the warmth of the hand-drawn style.

Because buying a home already has enough paperwork.

The video did not need to add emotional paperwork.

Launch & Results

The final result was an eye-catching and engaging video that gave Aussie Home Loans’ refreshed animation a new life.

It helped bring their service offering to audiences in a warmer, more personal way, guiding viewers through the journey from the customer’s point of view.

A little hand-drawn charm.

A little clever motion.

And a lot less “financial product video that feels like it was built in a boardroom with no windows.”
