Australian Institute of Sport Rest

Sport / Health

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) is the engine room of elite athletic development in Australia, supporting the physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing of high-performance athletes. When they approached us, they weren’t just looking to explain the science of rest. They were trying to reframe it. For many athletes, rest can feel like the absence of progress. AIS wanted to flip that mindset, educating their community on how recovery is not only essential but strategic.

Discovery & Strategy

This was more than a one-off explainer. The project called for a cultural shift. AIS was on a mission to help athletes understand the why behind their rest routines. The message needed to be grounded in science, built for resilience, and crafted to speak to a broad spectrum of competitors across disciplines and age groups.

We worked closely with the AIS team to develop a series of animated videos that could break down complex recovery science into everyday moments. These videos needed to be accessible, engaging, and grounded in real-life scenarios that athletes could instantly recognise as their own.

Concept Development

Our storytelling centred on familiarity. Rather than speaking in abstracts, we created scenes rooted in the daily experiences of athletes: training schedules, social pressures, tight turnarounds. Each video zoomed in on a single relatable moment, then unpacked the rest-related science behind it.

The tone balanced clarity and encouragement, helping viewers not only understand the mechanics of recovery but feel good about embracing it. It was part education, part mindset coaching.

Visual Design

We built on an animation style previously developed for AIS, but this time we wanted to push it further by adding depth, movement, and energy to reflect the elevated quality of the content. The design was clean and character-driven, allowing viewers to see themselves in the narrative, whether they were swimmers, sprinters, or netballers.

Warm, approachable colour palettes were paired with smooth transitions and pacing that echoed the idea of rest: steady, intentional, essential.

Testing & Refinement

This was one of those dream productions where everything flowed. With a clear brief, aligned vision, and trust from the AIS team, the creative process moved quickly and smoothly from script to screen. Feedback was minimal, collaboration was tight, and the work stayed on track from day one.

Launch & Results

The final series has been well received by both AIS staff and athletes. It has helped kick-start conversations around rest and recovery in a way that feels modern, inclusive, and easy to absorb. For us, it was a rewarding chance to take performance science and turn it into something personal, practical, and deeply human.
