Goodstart Early Learning is one of Australia’s largest early education providers, with a mission rooted in community, care, and positive social impact. When they approached us, they weren’t looking for a basic explainer video. They wanted a piece that could communicate the why behind their approach to education. Something that highlighted their people, their processes, and their commitment to reconciliation.
In our initial discovery sessions, it became clear that the animation needed to serve multiple purposes: communicate the strategy underpinning Goodstart’s educational model, reflect the human touch in their day-to-day work, and support cultural understanding and reconciliation. To achieve this, we recommended a cel animation approach. Labour intensive, yes, but also the perfect stylistic match for a story that’s all about care, intention, and hands-on connection.
Our concept focused on transformation through connection. We built a narrative thread that showcased how individual elements - educators, children, families, and culture - interact to create a nurturing learning environment. The voiceover was crafted to strike a balance between professional insight and warmth, while the visual narrative flowed between scenes in a way that echoed the real-life fluidity of learning and care.
To bring the cel animation vision to life, we assembled a wider team of experienced animators, all working together to craft the frame-by-frame feel that this style demands. The palette leaned into earthy, grounded tones that nod to culture and community, while the character and environment designs were built to feel inclusive, familiar, and authentic. Every visual decision was made to support the idea of hands-on education with heart.
Given the complexity of cel animation, we made space for regular client feedback and check-ins at key stages. Styleframes, animatics, and partial sequences were reviewed and refined in close collaboration with the Goodstart team, ensuring both visual consistency and message clarity throughout the piece. This iterative process allowed us to balance ambition with alignment.
The finished animation captures the heart of Goodstart’s mission in a way that’s both emotive and informative. It’s rich with hand-drawn character, thoughtful pacing, and a warmth that mirrors the educators themselves. While this was one of our more technically challenging projects, the outcome speaks volumes. A unique piece that stands apart and helps Goodstart share their values, processes, and people with clarity and care.
