Parents Empowered - Alcohol Talk

Parents Empowered are built around a powerful idea: parents are the number one reason kids don’t drink.

Which is both reassuring and mildly terrifying, because it means the awkward car chats, kitchen bench check-ins and “so, what do you and your friends think about alcohol?” moments really do matter.

They came to Explanimate needing a video to help parents understand how to talk to their kids about alcohol, especially because children often start forming their views between the ages of 9 and 13.

So, yes. Earlier than many parents expect.

Discovery & Strategy

The strategy was to make the message feel practical, not preachy.

The video needed to remind parents that they do not need one enormous, dramatic conversation complete with serious music and a family meeting agenda. Small, casual chats can be more useful, especially when they happen early and often.

The steps were clear: know the facts, start early, be clear and concise, ask questions and roleplay, and keep having small chats.

Simple advice. Big parenting job.

Concept Development

The creative idea was to make “the alcohol talk” feel approachable.

Rather than framing it as a scary milestone conversation, the video showed it as something parents can build into everyday life. A few questions here. A small chat there. A chance to listen, guide and stay connected.

Because when kids feel supported, the conversation is less likely to feel like an interrogation and more likely to feel like parenting doing its actual job.

Still awkward sometimes, obviously. We are not miracle workers.

Visual Design

The visual style needed to feel warm, clear and parent-friendly.

Each step was given its own moment, helping the advice feel easy to follow and remember. The animation kept the tone light while still respecting the importance of the message, using simple visual cues to make the guidance feel useful rather than overwhelming.

No doom. No lectures. No parent standing under a spotlight asking, “Do you know why I called this meeting?”

Just clear, practical advice for helping families start the conversation.

Testing & Refinement

Refinement focused on keeping the tone balanced.

The message needed to be serious enough to matter, but not so heavy that parents felt judged or scared off. We shaped the pacing and language so the video felt encouraging, direct and doable.

Because the goal was not to make parents feel perfect.

It was to help them feel ready.

Launch & Results

The final video gave Parents Empowered a clear, memorable way to encourage parents to start early, stay involved and keep the alcohol conversation going.

It helped turn a potentially intimidating topic into something smaller, calmer and more achievable.

Which is good news, because parenting already comes with enough surprise plot twists.
