Turnip the volume because this project was a real pea-ce of work! When Up on the Rooftop came to us, they wanted something fresh, fun, and visually stunning - and we were more than happy to dig in.

The goal? Blend 3D photorealistic environments (running at a silky 24fps) with traditional cel animation (at a charming 12fps), all while making them feel like they truly belonged in the same world. Easy, right? Well… let’s just say we had to get a little creative in the garden.

We knew this project needed seamless interaction between 3D and 2D elements. That meant careful planning, precise choreography, and a hefty dose of experimentation. Would our 2D line art elements feel at home in their 3D surroundings? Could we make a butterfly fly just right? These were the deep questions we pondered.

This is where things got radishing. We meticulously crafted a detailed 3D environment - glistening leaves, rich textures, and lighting so nice you could almost smell the fresh basil. Then came the hand-drawn animation, bringing in that classic, organic feel to complement the realism. Watching these two styles interact? Chefs kiss.

Mixing two frame rates in one animation was a challenge, but we weren’t about to let it beet us. We tweaked, adjusted, and finessed every frame until the motion felt natural, lively, and dynamic. The secret? A little extra squash and stretch (and maybe some thyme for good measure).

The final product? A beautifully harmonised blend of 2D and 3D, where crisp environments meet hand-drawn charm. It’s a project that proves great things sprout from creative problem solving and that sometimes, the best ideas are the ones that grow a little wild.
We think it turned out pretty grape. What do you reckon? 🍅✨
